1940s Britain was struggling with the lack of air power and the demands for aircraft in Europe. Transported by ship, the unpredictable timing of delivery was detrimental to their fight in WWII. Some UK planners broached the idea of flying the aircraft to the UK, direct from bases on the east coast of North America.

This wonderous aircraft came to its final rest at the North Atlantic Aviation Museum in 1996. Although we don’t have the entire plane, the cockpit on display and accessible for entry has been redesigned for an immersive simulated flight experience!

Our museum is home to the Safe Haven exhibit, sharing the stories of Gander and surrounding towns during that week in 2001. Join us for a video, thank you letters, and ATC audio. Along with a piece of steel from the Twin Towers on display. You can have your photo with Commander Gander, a local who was the host of a giant birthday party for kids. Beverly Bass’s uniform, featured in Come from Away, is on display along with other memorabilia.

NAAM is continually enhancing visitor experience with virtual displays, including a flight simulator that is a fun, all ages activity for the whole family! Come take a spin around Gander Int’l Airport in your favorite aircraft. You’ll get a feel for flight in real time!
